The Carol Giuriceo Computer Science Teacher of the Year Award

In 2021, the annual Rhode Island Computer Science (CS) Teacher of the Year Award was named in honor of Carol Giuriceo, a leader and champion of Computer Science for Rhode Island. Carol was passionate about including many different perspectives in all areas of her work. This award recognizes individuals who embody the impact of Carol’s work through collaboration, leadership, and innovation.

RECOGNITION & ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Carol Giuriceo has made a lasting impact on CS and STEAM related education in Rhode Island. Her many accomplishments include:

Creating partnerships with formal and informal K-16 education, business and industry, and government agencies to increases science, technology, engineering, arts + design, mathematics (STEAM) literacy among all Rhode Islanders.

Rhode Island K-12 Computer Science Standards, CS4RI Initiative: Organization and statewide lead of a multidisciplinary team of educators and industry professionals in development of K-12 Computer Science Education Standards which identify the knowledge, practices, and skills in computer science that all students should know and be able to do at each level in their education. Creation of a companion toolkit that includes materials, resources, and strategies that will assist district teams develop computer science implementation plans that meet the needs and capacity of individual schools.

Expanding Computing Education Pathways (ECEP) Alliance: Member of 3-person team representing Rhode Island in this National Science Foundation-funded program that seeks to increase the number and diversity of students in computer science by supporting state-level computing education reforms.

Million Women Mentors – Rhode Island (MWM-RI): Chair of the Rhode Island State Leadership Team, a statewide advisory committee with members from industry, education, and community-based organizations. MWM-RI focuses on building awareness for mentorship, partnering with mentoring organizations, and providing outreach to students in Rhode Island. Initiatives include college mentoring program, speakers bureau, STEAM events, and social media awareness campaigns. Governor Gina Raimondo serves as the honorary chair.

Rhode Island STEAM Now Coalition: Point person for working group of stakeholders from PK-12, higher education, after school programs, community-based organizations, informal education, non-profits, business and industry, and government agencies focused on improving science, technology, engineering, arts + design, mathematics (STEAM) education throughout Rhode Island.

Rhode Island Monthly and the Tech Collective 2018 TECH 10 Award: – Community Partner Recognized as one of the local individuals across ten categories, from tech educators to entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of modern society.
